  Leo Gordon

"Painting is a great way to relax, be creative and bring joy to people"

I was raised in Delaware and spent 30 years in South Florida before moving to Mooresville, NC in 2006.  I classify myself as a self-taught artist, but during my middle school years, I earned a scholarship to attend the Delaware Art Museum for drawing.  This provided a foundation for my future exploration and appreciation for art.

During my professional career, I called upon my drawing abilities to help illustrate my ideas to the Marketing/Advertising Departments.  It wasn’t until I suffer an injury in the mid 70’s, that kept me off  my feet for several week that I ventured into painting.  It  was during this period I found myself watching "Bill Alexander" paint his happy little mountains on Public Television using his "wet on wet" technique.   I purchased his kit and canvases and started painting.  My initial attempts were fairly good and encouraged when friends and family started asking for my paintings. However, due to demands of my career as a corporate executive and family, painting was put aside until I retired in 2006.  At that time I turned to Darrell Crow, a master in the wet on wet painting method, for a refresher and advanced techniques.

Throughout 2007 I focused primarily on oil paintings on subjects such as wild animals, birds, friend's pets, floral arrangements and landscapes.   In April 2007 my "Leo's Bad Hair Day" won a Gold Medal in the Silver Arts competition for Iredell County, NC.  I also became very active in the Mooresville Artist Guild  where I have made many new artist friends who have shared with me various techniques to help me grow as an artist.  I currently serve as their Treasurer.

In 2008 I expanded into watercolor and acrylics along with pen & ink sketches.  My Pen and Ink "Pelican in Flight" and my oil painting of a "Zebra" took Gold Medals in the 2008 Silver Arts competition.   My Watercolor of "Elephant in the Field" received a Silver Medal.

2009  has proved to be equally rewarding as I again won Gold, SIlver and Bronze Medals.in the Silver Arts competition.  I recently added another medium to the my resume as I am now creating collages.
