The Miss Race City USA Scholarship Pageant will
be the biggest winner at tonight’s Sitting Pretty Fundraiser silent
auction at the Artisan Market on Williamson Road.
Hosted by the Mooresville-South Iredell Chamber of Commerce, the event is open to the public and is a partnership between the Chamber, artists of the Artisan Market and the pageant.
Showing off their creative side, individuals and/or businesses submitted chairs, which were decorated with paint, stickers, sparkling jewels and upholstery and will be auctioned off at the market, located at the Mooresville Town Square shopping center.
The auction begins at 5 p.m. and closing bids will be accepted until 8:30 p.m. All proceeds go to the scholarship that will be awarded to the next Miss Race City USA on Oct. 29.
Lori Jackson, director of the pageant, said about 15 decorated chairs have been donated for the cause, with a wide diversity of creative ideas. She said she is excited of the response for this first-time event.
Amanda McCorkle and Sabrina Nicander of Home Instead Home health, both of whom are artisans of the Artisan Market, teamed up to help with the event and donated six entries.
Not only did McCorkle work on chairs, but it turned into a family affair as husband Shane and daughter Abigail got into the act painting and decorating several of the chair creations. “It was a blast,” McCorkle said.
The event brought out the artist in all ages as Nicander shared that two children, Savannah and Harley Bare, helped decorate one of the donated stools.
Some of the entries included a child’s tricycle with stuffed mice appropriately named “Miss Race City RatCycle” by artist Linda Wilson of Charlotte, a “Wing Backed” chair complete with a raven and feathers named “Nevermore” by artist Carol K. Allison, a stool painted with the face of the Statue of Liberty by artist Leo Gordon named “The True Ms. America, a pair of rocking chairs with sunsets and palm trees in the Home Instead color of purple and pink by the McCorkle family, and a bottlecap chair by McCorkle, a creation of Goddard School with brightly colored cushions with ABC’s on it and a brightly painted stool by Savannah and Harley.
All of the chairs will be on display at the market for bidders to see. In addition to the auction, there will also be live music for attendees to enjoy.
